<image:caption>This is a painting entitled “The Last Race of the night”. It was from one of those September evenings, when for the first time in a while, foul weather gear, hats and warmer under layers are employed. It could however, just as easily be from early spring. With water temperatures hovering around 45°, a cool windy day can feel much colder, despite the warm colors of that sunset! (Oil painting on panel, 10” x 10”)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Alla Prima Paintings - “Around Rich’s Head”</image:title>
<image:caption>Nearly 30 years ago, 940 acres on Frenchboro (an island off the coast of Maine) were listed for sale. Fearing that it would be purchased for subdivision, and seasonal home development, a group of concerned island residents forged a partnership with the Maine Coast Heritage Trust, the Island Institute and the Maine Seacoast Mission to conserve the land. In 2011, the entirety of Rich’s Head’s 192 acres was also donated to MCHT by David Rockefeller, the noted philanthropist and Mount Desert Island resident. Because of the forethought of these remarkable people we are able to enjoy this extraordinary place...with gratitude, with humility and with awe! This small painting captures a hike that I shared with some very good friends this summer! More reason to be thankful! “Around Rich’s Head” oil on prepared canvas, 8x10</image:caption>

<image:caption>A 12 x 12 alla Prima work from this summer. The Piscataqua Cafe. The site once held a small store, which burned to the ground in April 1896. The cafe, and a house across the street were built in 1898 by Luther Amazeen, who welcomed visitors who came up the sleepy road or via boat on the river. That arrangement worked well for a decade until Luther drowned when his lobster boat capsized. The Piscataqua Cafe’s days as a full-time bed and breakfast ended with his death but the property remained in the Amazeen family until 2010. “The Cafe” Oil on board 12” x 12”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Studio Paintings - “Coriolis”</image:title>
<image:caption>The spiral that dominates the design of this painting is the same spiral that informs our weather-all related to the earth’s rotation! Storms and low pressure systems ‘clock’ counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere…clockwise in the southern hemisphere. Understanding the coriolis effect, a competent mariner can tell if a breeze is to build or fall based on these indicators. It’s one of the reasons why these more seasoned sailors always find where the wind will be, before the rest of the fleet. And it’s a good way to know if the anchorage you’ve chosen for the night will be a sheltered one or not! ”Coriolis” (24x32)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Studio Paintings - Pausing on Babson Island</image:title>
<image:caption>Every year the people at Rockport Marine and Brooklin Boatyard put on a regatta for over a hundred classic wooden sailboats: The Eggemoggin Reach Regatta. Sailors gather at the Wooden boat school’s campus whose waterfront and anchorage serves as home for the event. But in all my visits, I’ve never met a soul who honestly knows what this anchorage is called! Naskeag defines it’s western boundary and Babson Island guards it to the south. And it was Babson Island that I was exploring when I came upon this young physician from Wisconsin. He had been sailing around the world with his wife and decided in that moment, that the peaceful empty beach along Babson’s southwestern shore, was what he’d been searching for all along! Miles and miles of trails through fragile spruce forests, dark, damp and cool. Your eyes quickly adjust to these shady environs, dotted with mushrooms and decaying undergrowth. We look out for one another, knowing that despite a somewhat tentative relationship, the other might come in handy if we get into some sort of trouble… mechanically or otherwise! We could head back into Stonington to buy a dozen. But aren’t they catching them to sell them anyhow? It certainly sets the bar pretty high for others claiming to be selling “fresh seafood”! <image:title>Studio Paintings - “Running down Isle Au Haut Bay”</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve had a number of recent conversations debating wether or not an artistic endeavor can exist without an accompanying narrative, either implied by the artist, or as interpreted by his or her audience. I happen to believe that all “art is story telling“! Wether it happens to be the artist's intention or not! The painting that I’m sharing with you today, is about light, and movement. And Yes, I am telling some lies with regard to the sea state. But those lies are in support of certain truths that I’m hoping to express. Not everyone has had the opportunity to experience sunlight shining through the crests of a following sea. Or to stand on the deck of a sailboat on a blazing hot summer afternoon running wing on wing down Isle Au Haut Bay, reveling in the cool shade that the main sail will provide until you must round up near the Brown Cow to Mark Island Ledge, following the Deer Island Thorofare to Humpkins Ledge settling into the anchorage in Hell’s half acre with the promise of a swim and a cold beer...maybe two. “Running down Isle Au Haut Bay” Oil on board (24” x 48”)</image:caption>

With her overhanging stern and graceful bowsprit, Hesper was voted “the most photogenic”within this fleet of extraordinarily photogenic wooden sailboats. But for this painting, I’ve cropped out the bow and stern and have focused my attention on the solidness of both the Hesper and her crew as they plow effortlessly through the green waters of the gulf of Maine. <image:caption>Late summer afternoons on the outer islands of Maine are spectacular! On a clear day, if you’re lucky-the sun will kiss the surface of the gulf of Maine in just the right way, and for that moment, the sun, and sky and sea become one! And your island appears to float in a heavenly, crystalline light! You’re not entirely sure why you’re still carrying the smooth weathered stone that you picked up on the beach some moments ago, but it’s warm and it’s weighty and it’s presence seems to ground you to a place that you love.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At the leeward mark, the stillness of a downwind leg ends abruptly as crew mates scurry to their assigned roles. The guy and lazy sheet are eased forward to the head stay and the active sheet is gathered in as the halyard is mindfully lowered. If dropped too quickly, or gathered too slowly, the chute can drop into the water, stalling boat speed and demoralizing the spirits of captain and crew! But when it’s done properly, and the spinnaker is gathered in gracefully on deck as it collapses, it’s one of the finest moments for all aboard!</image:caption>

<image:caption>It’s not officially summer, but our attention has moved outdoors. The days have been warm but the evenings are still cool and comfortable enough to justify a fire in the fire pit at the dock head. I had been intrigued by the silhouette of the abandoned Naval prison, standing dark against the blue green sky of twilight; it’s reflection echoed on the pale blue surface of the river. But once the drawing was complete, I realized that i’ll have to paint the scene in full color to capture the warmth of the firelight against those cool blues and greens! “Turning Heads” Graphite on Arches Printmaking Paper (14” x 20”)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Drawings - “8 point Star”</image:title>
<image:caption>At its core, the drawing is structured on an eight point Star, with the elements radiating out from a point roughly a third of the way in from the left. A group of teenagers on a mountain top in one of the most beautiful places on the planet-each of them deep in thought. This is certainly, a shared moment, but they’re all gazing in different directions; perhaps imagining different paths; different concerns; different perspectives. It’s a heady time in life. Thinking about the “you” that is separate from your friends, when just recently, being a part of the pack was all that mattered. The eight point star is used by so many cultures to describe this moment of creation, whether it’s about creating your own reality, preparing for the next season or cycle, or just knowing which way to turn at that next intersection! “8 point Star” (Acadia Mountain Trail, peak of Robinson Mtn.) <image:caption>This ones just for the fun of it... My girl had a serious horse addiction for a bunch of years. Lessons and eventually competing in IEA events. But with high school and all that comes with high school, there was little time for riding. I know there are things about it that she misses. The connection she made with these beautiful animals; asking them to perform for her; brushing and caring for them. And I also know that she’s taken more lessons from the experience than She or I will ever know. Lessons about stewardship and responsibility. About competition and teamwork. Perhaps at some point in her life she’ll ride again, perhaps not. But the lessons will stay with her forever. “Shoo Fly!” Charcoal on 90lb sketch 18 x 24</image:caption>

And because he flew the highest, an eagle’s feather was perhaps prized above all others.
